Lemaire Fall 2023 Menswear Review
The collection was not very exciting, but we do love its practicality.
Designer Bio
Helmed by Christophe Lemaire and Sarah-Linh Tran, the LEMAIRE brand offers a timeless Parisian style that is cosmopolitan, sophisticated and rich in influences. Crafted from fabrics selected for their quality and designed for everyday wear, the wardrobe is eminently modular—the supple silhouettes and soft color palette allow LEMAIRE outfits to be restyled and accented over time. Pieces from different collections and seasons can be paired effortlessly while maintaining the space floating around the body as it moves. Some elements are borrowed from traditional Asian clothing: deep pockets, sleek design, and the allegory of the perfectly proportioned home as a protective shelter for a peaceful, self-assured life. Workwear and military garb lend practicality and sturdy finishing to the pieces in the wardrobe. The color palette features a broad array of neutral, earthy and muted shades that highlight the pure lines of the silhouette and compliment the face and body. (SOURCE: Lemaire)
Overall Review
One of the best things about Lemaire is that everything is wearable, though we feel it’s a little too wearable to the point that there is no sense of creativity; but then again, I still love the house and fully respect their codes. According to the brand, their Fall 2023 collection is about relaxed tones that lie somewhere between restraint and letting loose, structured and deconstructed. They also said that their collection was also about urban silhouettes, meaning large collars, blouses, pockets, and bags.
There were duffle coats, peacoats, puffer jackets, topcoats, and more; our favorite was the white belted jacket (look 37 in WWD); it’s like a short oversize trench coat that looked absolutely chic, especially the way it was styled. There was also a tailored double-breasted suit (look 45 in WWD) that looked very simple and elegant; it's the ideal outfit for a day at work followed by a soiree.
There were also some bags in the collection that looked very unappealing; despite this, however, they did complete the whole workwear vibe. Our favorite look in the collection was the oversize printed silk shirt (which was a collaboration with the Indonesian artist Noviadi Angkasapura, who is known for his drawings that have a spiritual message) matched with a knee-length skirt and knee-high boots. We believe the look adds some spice to the very minimalistic collection.
The collection was not very exciting, but we do love its practicality. And even though the house’s DNA was never about being avant-garde, we appreciate the fact that they collaborate with artists to produce something fun and different.
